Listen, The way that you described your first encounter with Deante Kyle And Big Katt and the G&E podcast was so accurate! I had the same experience it was exactly the way i discovered them as well. I watch it so much now that my 8 year old daughter begs me to watch it with me at night. Thank you for this read, and after purchasing my ticket to the Meet and Greet a few moments ago this confirmed that I made the right choice! I enjoyed this so much , you are an incredible writer. You inspired me just now as I too share a passion of books and writing that I have longed stepped away from but it has always been in my heart. I look forward to reading more from you! Oh, would you consider curating a reading list of black literature you’d recommend for the culture?

Great read! Wasn’t aware of Portlands past, so thank you for sharing that. The G&E podcast has enlightened me in so many ways too. I’m glad that others are recognizing them because they are the truth!

Thank you for this. This was a great read in the times of short attention spans. I was able to lock in and really dive into this and not get bored. Great work & great job including not only your experience in Portland but also the historical aspects bc I’ve never knew this. I like the way you tied this all into you rekindling (I guess that’s the word?) your identity with your blackness plus adding G&E and how it inspired you even more. Thank you.

A couple of other Portland history things:

Oregon was constitutionally racist until 2002, until measure 14 which formally removed racial language such as "negroes", "mulattos," and "whites."

2002!

Hattie Redmond, a Black suffragist and the first black business owner in Portland, is buried in the Lone Fir cemetery. Originally, the owners of the graveyard prohibited her from purchasing a plot because they didn't want a Black body buried near any Whites.

Do you know what she did?

She bought six more plots, each one around hers, to solve that problem.

There's a lot of unmarked Chinese graves in Lone Fir as well, in block 14, but that may be besides the point.
